1st year of my #PhD done✅ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Completing the first year of my PhD program has been so stressful, yet equally as rewarding.
🌈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One thing I was reminded of this year is the debilitating pressure of “perfectionism”. It’s easy to misconstrue “personal best” with “perfect” but let’s remember, they are not the same thing. Rather than aim for a construct of perfection, I re-learned the importance of giving something my best effort and then- instead of beating myself up about how I could have done it better- moving on. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But of course, that’s easier said than done. And Instagram doesn’t help, especially when it often calls for a “formally impeccable presentation of the self”. In which graduate students often oblige by posting photos depicting moments of success. Celebrating our success is great! But by filtering out our failures, we curate a false reality that feeds the perfection-complex and ultimately damages our mental health and well-being. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🌈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With that in mind, let’s be honest about #gradschoollife on #instagram . Fellowships/scholarship applications are denied. Presentations don’t go according to plan. Research proposals are questioned. Readings can be dense and overly jargonistic. Departments demand more time than you can spare. The #PhDJourney is hard, and definitely not picture perfect. And that’s OK 💗
