I’m an #academic, who believes it is my responsibility to use my knowledge & resources to provide educational materials & critical discourse to my community, that might otherwise be inaccessible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Why? That’s easy. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▻Because our education system is in crisis. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▻Because the #humanities & #socialsciences are consistently defunded. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▻Because Trump wants to cut the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▻Because Betsy Devos, the unqualified Secretary of Education, is aggressively attacking public edu. funding in favor of for-profit-colleges. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▻Because despite defunding, tuition prices have steadily increased. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ▻Because #teachers in this country are living in #poverty, while their workload and class sizes increase- which causes their curriculum to suffer.
▻Because lack of education, is the root of A LOT of problems (climate change denial, flat earthers, racism, reproductive injustice, etc). ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ▻Because #anthropology is under-funded & under-appreciated but I believe it has a lot to offer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So long as #education is under attack, I will persist. #thatswhy ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’ve been under the weather for almost two weeks, and super stressed. But no matter how unwell I may be feeling, good music will always raise my spirits. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I particularly love #blues & #jazz, and before I got sick I had the opportunity to attend the #sanfrancisco blues festival. This trip rekindled my interest in #ethnomusicology, a sub-field where #anthropology and #music collide. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Or as Alan Merriam (1964) puts it “the study of music in culture”…a combo of the “musicological and the ethnological”. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This Labor Day is particularly special in that it marks the beginning of my second year in my PhD program studying the anthropology of labor rights, economic activism, post-work, and the intersections of passionate work and exploitative labor.
.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In studying labor rights, I’ve found a deep appreciation for this national holiday. While many see Labor Day as just another day off work, I urge you to take a minute to consider the history, and significance of this special day. First celebrated in 1882, Labor Day honors the social and economic achievements of American workers who ultimately made this country the prosperous super power that it is today. ⠀.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ This day is meant to celebrate workers, all workers. Whether you work outside with your hands, or work inside behind a computer- work is work. And YOUR work has, and will continue to shape this country. Do you feel appreciated as a worker? Does your work feel respected? Do your ancestors, or older family members feel honored for their work? Not just today, but everyday? Too many people in this country are saying, and have been saying, no. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀While I can argue that workers have always been exploited in some way, the Trump administration has openly embraced exploitation as good business. Glorifying longer work days, on-call culture and company outsourcing, attacking social security benefits, encouraging religious and LGBTQ employment discrimination, denying wage increases in favor of tax cuts for the rich, and increasingly demonizing the poor, jobless, union advocates and migrant workers- this is the new normal. ⠀⠀ ⠀.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ But I hope we can all find the time today to reflect on workers rights within this country, and what we’re willing to do to secure them. And to examine our work culture as a whole. Work, has been sold as a painful enterprise, a sacrifice you endure, and can never change. But I challenge you to think otherwise for today. Even for a moment. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Stay Strange🖤 ⠀
